What alternatives are there to the traditional wedding breakfast?

Alternatives
Traditionally, a wedding ceremony is followed by a three-course meal for guests. However, more and more of today’s newlyweds are choosing different options. Here, we take a look at the alternatives available.

What is a wedding breakfast?

The wedding breakfast is the meal that is eaten by wedding guests following the ceremony. Unlike its name, the wedding breakfast is unlikely to be eaten in the morning and is usually the main meal at a wedding reception, followed by speeches. The traditional wedding breakfasts of yesteryear would have been a three-course sit-down meal or, very occasionally, a buffet. This was served after a welcome drinks reception, during which there may have been canapes. Today’s modern couples are not restricted by tradition and while many do still offer their guests a three-course meal, many are turning to alternative menus ideas for their first meal as a married couple.

Traditional wedding breakfast

A traditional sit-down wedding breakfast will consist of three courses – a starter, a main and a dessert. The ALS Group offers a traditional 3-course wedding breakfast menu where all guests enjoy the courses picked by the hosts from a choice of options.

A la carte wedding menus

With an a la carte wedding menu, guests are able to choose their own meal courses from a choice of dishes, and this can be a great option for smaller wedding parties. We offer two a la carte menus that would be ideal for a wedding celebration; A Taste of Scotland offers traditional Sottish fayre prepared by our own in-house Scottish chef and made with Scottish produce, while our a la carte Fine Dining Menu offers a wide choice of handmade and prepared dishes to suit everyone.

For couples looking for a break from tradition, there is a wide selection of food options as follows:

BBQ Catering

Long associated with a relaxed atmosphere, a barbecue is a great way to offer your wedding guests something a little different. Inviting your guests to choose from a host of freshly prepared grilled meat and vegetarian dishes with sides and accompaniments will create a sociable and stress-free tone for your celebrations. Our BBQ Catering has three options, all with gluten free available on request, and we can also supply cutlery and staff so that all the happy couple has to do is enjoy themselves!

Wedding Buffet Catering

Traditionally the default choice for couples not wanting a three-course meal, the wedding buffet is still a popular option. A classic Party Buffet Menu will always be a success, offering mouthwatering sandwiches, salads and desserts, or why not provide a Hot Buffet Menu and let your guests choose from ribs, chicken or popular pizza, amongst many? Perfect for a winter wedding!

Grazing Platters

A grazing station is a great alternative to the traditional wedding breakfast and works well for couples preferring a steady flow of food throughout the day. An array of Grazing Platters, all beautifully styled and presented, will give guests a visual treat. Choose from rustic, Mediterranean or seafood platters or keep it simple with a charcuterie platter or a cheese platter. Of course, for the sweet toothed, and to round the meal off perfectly, there is always the dessert platter!

Hog Roast Wedding Breakfast

Who says a hog roast is only suited to an evening reception? A traditional hog roast can be the perfect main course for a wedding breakfast! Start your meal with a choice of canapes, before serving the hog roast with a choice of sides and salad, all finished off with a selection of fun foods, including doughnuts, waffles, churros or even popcorn and candy floss.
